1. I have missing teeth in the back. Is that a problem?
It’s a problem if:
a. You have a problem chewing
b. It’s a cosmetic concern for you.
c. The tooth in the opposite arch is not protected from growing down into the space of the missing tooth then it is not a problem if you do not consider it a problem.
2. How can missing teeth be replaced?
If it is a problem for you with chewing or cosmetically, a missing tooth or teeth can be replaced with implants, fixed bridges or a removable bridge (partial dentures or full dentures). There are many types of bridges. An evaluation of a number of issues is necessary to make the determination about which of these replacements would be best for you.
3. I was told to have implants. What are implants?
Implants are cylinders of titanium that can be thought of as a root replacement for the missing tooth. After the bone grows into the implant surface a post and a crown can be placed. The beauty of an implant is that it feels like your own tooth, lasts a very long time, and it does not require compromising surrounding teeth that would need crowns on them if a fixed bridge were chosen.

4. I’ve been told I can’t have implants, why not?
In most cases, anyone healthy enough to undergo a routine dental extraction or oral surgery can be considered for an implant procedure. Patients need healthy gums and enough bone to hold the implant. They also must be committed to good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Heavy smokers, people who have uncontrolled chronic disorders such as diabetes or heart disease, or patients who have had radiation therapy to the head or neck area need to be evaluated on an individual basis.
